So, Mr. Galabad has an issue in his hoof that requires soaking with epsom salts and water. We've never had to do this before, and while Gali isn't the most cooperative horse on the ground, he has no problems with water or puddles or having his hooves handled, so I didn't think he would protest too much. I think I posted earlier about my horse getting glue on shoes put on.

Now he has graduated to another shoe, which I had never heard of before the new farrier introduced them to Alph.
They are "flip flops", with only half a horse shoe and a pad that covers the heel but is not attached in the back, so it flips back and forth as he moves.

So. My boy pulled a shoe. The other is on firmly. Unfortunately, there are two major problems - the first of which is that my farrier is out on an overnight trail ride until Friday evening.   I need some advice.  My farrier today discovered that my new gelding, Dan, has white line disease in all four feet to some degree.  He told me to clean the hoof the hoof, dig out around the hoof wall, and treat it with kopertox to try and slow it down.

winter means snow, and snow means packed ice in hooves. i'm tired of spending 30-40 minutes every night de-icing everybody's hooves. i know vaseline can do a lot to prevent the ice buildup, but i was wondering if it would still be as effective if it had to be applied at night instead of when they get turned out in the morning. my bosses are ( Read more... )
